Three Billy Goats Gruff Story and Flannel Board

In November, my storytimes will be focusing on traditions. Most families have at least one holiday tradition. It might be saying what they are thankful for, cooking special dishes together or just sitting down at the table for a meal together.

At storytime, we will be sharing our personal traditions and then diving into some traditional stories and nursery rhymes.

One of my favorite folktales is Three Billy Goats Gruff (also know as "the Three Goats" in Germany and Poland.)

Below you will find free printable character and scenery to cut our for your flannel board as you tell this charming action-packed tale.

Three Billy Goats Gruff

An English Tale

On a sunny day, three goats had a rumbling in their tummies. They started to head up to the hill where the best grasses grew. To get there, the goats needed to cross a bridge.

When they got to the bridge, a large nasty troll bounded up on top of the bridge clocking the way of the goats.

“Stop!” snarled the troll. The littlest goat stopped in his tracks and pleaded with the troll. “Please don’t eat me! I am much too small to be eaten. Wait for my brother who is much larger than I am.”

The troll liked the sound of this and stepped to the side for the little goat to pass.

Next went the second, bigger goat. Again, up bounded the troll upon the bridge and blocked the bigger goats way.

“Stop!” snarled the troll. The bogger goat stopped in his tracks and pleaded with the troll. “Please don’t eat me! I am much too small to be eaten. Wait for my brother who is much larger than I am.”

The troll liked the sound of this and stepped to the side for the bigger goat to pass.

Now it was time for the biggest goat to cross. He had seen what the troll had done to his brothers and was furious! He headed for the bridge and didn’t stop when the troll bounded up. Once the troll was on the bridge, the biggest goat stomped right over him then headed up the hill to eat grass with his brothers.
