Candle Making Workshop for Teens Lesson Plan Outline
Candles have a long and rich history, dating back thousands of years. The earliest evidence of candle-like objects dates to around 2000 BCE in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians created simple torches and oil lamps, using reeds soaked in animal fat. By 500 BCE, the Greeks began crafting candles by dipping rolled papyrus or reeds into tallow (animal fat) or beeswax, allowing them to burn longer and brighter.
In ancient Rome, candles were used for both practical and ceremonial purposes. They were primarily made from tallow and were often used in religious rituals. During the Middle Ages, the use of candles spread across Europe, with beeswax being the preferred material for high-quality candles, often used in churches.
The 19th century saw significant advancements in candle-making. In 1825, the French chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul discovered stearin, a substance derived from animal fats, which made for cleaner, longer-lasting candles. In 1854, the invention of paraffin wax, derived from petroleum, revolutionized candle production. It was odorless, cleaner, and more affordable than tallow or beeswax.
Candles evolved from a necessity for light to a decorative and symbolic item, used in celebrations, rituals, and home decor. Today, candles continue to play a role in various cultural practices, offering both ambiance and fragrance.
This candle making workshop is simple and fun. Kits can be found on Amazon or in craft stores. I hope your teens enjoy this project as much as mine!
