Teen Sewing Project: Microwave Bowl Cozy - Free Printable
Materials:
2 pieces of fabric (10”x10” each)
2 pieces of cotton batting (10”x10”)
Matching thread
Scissors
Pins or fabric clips
Sewing machine (or needle for hand sewing)
Optional: fabric marking pen or pencil
Steps:
Prepare your materials:
Cut two squares of fabric (10”x10”) and two squares of cotton batting (10”x10”). You can adjust the size depending on the bowl you want to use it with.
Layer the fabric:
Place the cotton batting flat, followed by the second piece of fabric, right side facing up.
Pin the layers:
Pin or clip the fabric layers together to prevent shifting while sewing.
Create the folds:
Fold the fabric into quarters by folding the square in half both ways (vertically and horizontally). Pin the folds to hold them in place.
Sew the folds:
Sew along the folds to create the cozy’s shape. You can sew a couple of lines to ensure it holds the form, and it will help it fit snugly around the bowl.
Sew the edges:
Using a ¼” seam allowance, sew around the edges of the fabric, leaving a small gap (about 2” to 3”) unsewn so you can turn the cozy right-side out later.
Clip corners:
Trim the corners of the fabric to reduce bulk, being careful not to cut into the stitches.
Turn the fabric:
Turn the cozy right-side out by pulling the fabric through the gap you left. Gently push out the corners for a sharp look.
Topstitch the edges:
Topstitch around the entire square, close to the edge, to seal the gap and add a decorative finish.
And you’re done! You’ve made a microwave bowl cozy. It’ll help keep your hands safe from hot bowls, and it’s a cute and practical project!
