Storytime Outlines Winter Traditions

As the holiday season approaches, it’s a wonderful time to teach kids about the rich traditions that make this time of year so special.

Try reading traditional stories and folktales at storytime. Some classics include:

Three Billy Goats Gruff
Three Little Pigs
Little Red Riding Hood

You can also focus on reading books that teach kids about all the many winter holidays.

I believe books are a perfect way to introduce children to the diverse customs and celebrations that fill the world with joy during the holidays.

Reading stories about different holiday traditions helps children learn about the importance of family, community, and culture. Whether it’s learning about Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, or even winter solstice celebrations, each story offers valuable lessons in gratitude, giving, and togetherness.

At the library, we have a wide range of books that highlight various traditions, from folktales and picture books to nonfiction resources. These stories allow children to explore not just what’s celebrated, but why these traditions matter to the people who observe them.

Additionally, incorporating these lessons into fun, hands-on activities such as crafting holiday cards, baking special treats, or sharing stories of their own family traditions helps make learning even more engaging.

This holiday season, I encourage you to explore books that celebrate the customs and values that bring us closer together. It's a perfect way to teach kids the beauty of both shared and unique traditions!
