Storytime Outline and Craft Lesson Plan: Parts of the Body

This week's storytime is all about the parts of the body. We will be reading "Who Has These Feet" by Laura Hulbert, an adorable animal feet guessing game.

"From Head to Toe" by Bill Martin, one of my favorite authors, showcases all our parts from head to toe!

After storytime, there will be a take home craft. Kids will be making paper doll self portraits. As they dress their dolls, caregivers can point out hands, feet, legs, arms and more.

This is a fun hands-on activity to keep kiddos engaged.

Happy Planning!

Teaching babies the parts of their body is an exciting and foundational step in their early development. While it might seem like a simple task, it plays a crucial role in building their understanding of the world around them. From an early age, babies are naturally curious about their bodies, and parents can use this curiosity to introduce basic body parts in a fun, engaging way.

One of the best methods is through songs, rhymes, and games. Nursery rhymes like “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” not only entertain but also reinforce body awareness. Gentle touch and pointing to each body part as you name it helps babies make connections between the word and the actual part of the body.

Interactive toys, such as dolls or plush animals, are also great tools for teaching. Parents can point to the doll’s eyes, ears, and mouth, allowing the baby to mimic the actions and understand the names of body parts.

By making learning playful and hands-on, babies can start recognizing their body parts and associating them with words, promoting both cognitive and motor skills. This process fosters self-awareness and helps children communicate about their bodies as they grow older. It’s a fun, essential part of their developmental journey!
